Hot water repaired or replaced, decided on the evidence.

Repair assessed before replacement is sold.
Most hot water decisions get made the day the shower runs cold. Measured Plumbing repairs, services, installs and replaces hot water systems across inner Melbourne, and the first job is working out whether the existing unit is worth keeping. That call rests on the unit's age, the state of the cylinder, what has actually failed, and whether the system still matches how the household uses hot water.
Not every puddle under a unit means the unit is finished. A tank that has split cannot be repaired, but water from a fitting or a relief valve usually can be, so the system is inspected before any recommendation is made. If replacement is the answer, the new unit is sized to the household's outlets and peak demand rather than copied from the badge on the old one.
Every changeover is written up before it is booked: the unit, the fuel type, what is included and the compliance work. Any new installation feeding bathroom outlets gets a tempering valve, since the plumbing code caps delivered water at those fixtures at 50 degrees. If the changeover changes the gas connection, the line is resized and pressure tested on the same visit, and the old unit is removed.
Repairs, servicing and replacements for every system type.
Getting a failed system running, keeping a working one reliable, and replacing a unit that has reached the end of its life. Each system type has its own requirements.
Hot water repairs
Thermostats, elements, gas control valves, pilot and ignition faults, tempering valves, relief valves and leaking connections.
Hot water servicing
Anode and relief valve checks, sediment flushed from the cylinder, temperature and pressure tested so a working unit keeps working.
System replacement
Like-for-like changeovers or a change of system type, with the old unit disconnected, removed and disposed of.
Gas storage and continuous flow
Sized to the number of outlets and the gas supply available, then commissioned and tested on completion.
Electric storage
Repaired or replaced, including the off-peak controlled load setups common in older inner-city homes.
Heat pump installation
Location, condensate drainage, clearances and noise assessed before the unit is quoted, with rebate eligibility confirmed at the same time.
Apartment and rental changeovers
Access, unit location and owners corporation approval sorted in the scope before booking, including work arranged through a strata manager.
Tempering valves and compliance
Tempering and relief valves fitted, set and tested, with a compliance certificate issued where the work requires one.
What a changeover includes.
The unit is only part of the scope. A proper quote lists everything else too.
- Inspection of the existing unit and a straight repair-or-replace call
- System type and size matched to outlets, peak demand and the property's supply
- Written quote naming the unit, fuel type, inclusions and compliance items
- Water, gas or power isolated, old unit drained and removed
- New unit installed and connected, with pipework brought up to standard where needed
- Gas line resized and pressure tested where the connection changes
- Tempering valve and relief valve fitted, set and tested
- Unit commissioned and delivery temperatures checked
- Old unit disposed of and the area cleaned down
- Walk-through of the controls before we leave
- Compliance certificate where the work requires one
The right system for the property you have.
What the property can support narrows the choice before efficiency does.
- 01
Homes with an existing gas connection and flue location: a gas storage unit gives steady recovery and is simple to replace like-for-like.
- 02
Households that want no cylinder and no standing heat loss: continuous flow gas, provided the gas supply is adequate and the unit is sized to the outlets in use at once.
- 03
Properties with no gas, including older inner-suburban homes on a controlled load tariff: electric storage is the straightforward option.
- 04
Homes with outdoor space, condensate drainage and clearance from neighbouring windows and boundaries: a heat pump is the cheapest to run, and Victorian and federal rebates may apply.
- 05
Apartments and townhouses: unit location, flue or ventilation and owners corporation rules usually settle the choice, and the scope is documented so a manager or committee can approve it.
- 06
Rentals and managed properties: changeovers booked through a property or strata manager, with access and approvals handled before the day.
Rebate eligibility depends on the property and the system, and it is confirmed as part of the quote rather than assumed.
Hot water work across the inner suburbs.

Storage unit changeover
A like-for-like storage unit replacement, with the old cylinder removed and new valves fitted.

Valves and fit-off
Tempering valve, relief valve and isolation fitted off and tested on a new installation.

Hot water service
Anode and relief valve checked, sediment flushed and temperatures tested on a working unit.
What affects the cost of a replacement.
Whether the changeover is like-for-like or a change of fuel type matters most. Switching type can mean gas or electrical work, a new location or a flue alteration, and each of those adds to the scope. Access matters too: a cylinder in a roof space, on a balcony or up a flight of stairs takes longer than one beside a back door.
A proper quote also carries the items that are easy to leave off: the tempering and relief valve compliance, removal and disposal of the old unit, and any pipework that has to be brought up to standard. Measured Plumbing writes all of it out after inspecting the existing installation, so you know exactly what the changeover includes before it is booked.
Scope, inclusions and exclusions, in writing.
Anything outside what was agreed is priced and approved before it proceeds, so no variation lands on an invoice unannounced.
How a changeover runs.
- 01
Inspect and diagnose
The existing system is inspected, the fault confirmed, and repair or replacement recommended with the reasoning.
- 02
Size the system
If replacement is the answer, the type and size are matched to the household and the property's supply.
- 03
Confirm in writing
The work and quote are set out in writing, including compliance items and disposal of the old unit.
- 04
Isolate and remove
Water, gas or power isolated, then the old unit drained and taken out.
- 05
Install and connect
The new system is installed and connected, then the tempering and relief valves set and tested.
- 06
Commission and hand over
Temperatures checked, the area cleaned down, and you are walked through how the unit operates.
Cylinder flooding the laundry right now?
Close the cold inlet valve at the top of the unit, switch off its power or gas, and call. That is an urgent call-out, not a booking.
What customers say, in their own words.
