Right the first time, while the walls are open.
Most renovations turn on one question early: does the plumbing stay put, or does it move? The answer shapes the budget and the program, and sometimes the layout itself, so Measured Plumbing answers it on site against the real room, the fall of the existing drainage and the structure, before anything is locked in.
The plumbing on a renovation happens in two visits. The rough-in goes in while the floor and walls are open: water, waste and vent pipework run to the fixture positions. The fit-off comes after tiling, when tapware, fixtures and drainage are connected. The waterproofer, tiler and cabinetmaker build over the set-out in between, so there is no cheap way to fix a position that was wrong.
Heath brings the habits of commercial construction to staged domestic work: fixture positions confirmed on site, rough-in pressure tested before it disappears behind plaster, dates confirmed with the builder, and a written scope listing fixtures, points and exclusions before work starts. After the waterproofing goes on, every change costs real money.
Bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and whole new builds.
One bathroom in an established house, or every wet area on a new build or extension.
Bathroom plumbing
Positions for the shower, bath, basin and toilet confirmed, pipework roughed in, then everything fitted off to the tiled surfaces.
Kitchen plumbing
Wastes for the sink and dishwasher, the mixer and any filtered water point, with appliance connections timed around the cabinetmaker.
Laundry plumbing
Washing machine taps, the trough and the floor waste moved or renewed to suit the new layout.
Plumbing rough-in
Vent, waste and water lines run to the confirmed positions and held under pressure while the room is still open.
Plumbing fit-off
Mixers, tapware, cisterns and wastes connected after tiling, then every fixture run and checked before handover.
New homes & extensions
The complete water, sanitary and drainage install on a new house or extension, run to the builder's program.
Hot water relocation
A new or relocated hot water unit sized to the finished household rather than the one being demolished.
Set out on site
Fixture positions confirmed against the actual room and the drainage fall before the rough-in starts.
What a renovation plumbing scope covers.
The written scope lists fixtures, points, relocations, site visits and exclusions before work starts, so any later change is a decision you make rather than a surprise on the invoice.
- Site assessment of the room, existing pipework and drainage fall
- Proposed layout checked against what the building can take
- Written fixture list with points, relocations and exclusions
- Redundant pipework removed or capped safely at demolition
- Water, waste and vent rough-in to the confirmed fixture positions
- Rough-in pressure tested before the waterproofer starts
- Fit-off booked around the tiler and cabinetmaker
- Every mixer, cistern, waste and fixture connected and commissioned after tiling
- Connections checked under pressure at handover
- Fixtures left protected and the work walked through with you
- Compliance certificate issued where the work requires one
Renovations and builds we take on.
Houses, apartments, extensions and new builds across inner Melbourne, booked directly or through the builder.
- 01
Bathroom renovations in existing homes, from set-out through rough-in to fit-off on the finished surfaces.
- 02
Kitchens and laundries, coordinated with the cabinetmaker so wastes, stops and appliance points land where the joinery needs them.
- 03
New homes and extensions, with the full water, sanitary and drainage installation to the approved plan.
- 04
Older inner-Melbourne houses, where one wall cavity can hold galvanised, copper and PVC from three different eras.
- 05
Apartments, where owners corporation sign-off on access and the works is usually needed before anything is demolished.
- 06
Builder-led projects, where Measured Plumbing takes the plumbing package and works to the program.
- 07
Owner-builder jobs, where you get a plumber who tells you the next step and the date it has to happen by.
- 08
Homes on concrete slabs, where relocating a waste means cutting and re-coring the slab, and is worth doing once rather than compromising the room.
Drainage fall and structure are checked on site before any layout is locked in.
Rough-in and fit-off on the tools.
Pipework proved under pressure before it disappears behind plaster and tiles.

Bathroom rough-in
Water and waste lines run to the confirmed positions while the floor and walls are still open.

Tested and ready
Rough-in pressure tested and left ready for the waterproofer before the room is closed up.

New build set-out
Water, sanitary and drainage rough-in to the approved plan on a new build or extension.
More than a fixture count.
Counting the fixtures gives you a starting point, not a price. The bigger variables are the distance pipework has to run, a timber floor versus a concrete slab, how much of the old installation is being stripped out, and the style of tapware. A wall-mounted mixer, an in-wall cistern or a freestanding bath all need more set-out work than their surface-mounted equivalents. Any tiled room needs two visits, and both should be visible in the quote.
Get the scope in writing before you commit, and make sure it says who supplies the fixtures. Supplying your own tapware is fine and common, as long as it has arrived before the rough-in so the set-out can be measured off the real product. If opening a wall turns up galvanised or lead-jointed pipe at the end of its life, renewing that run back to sound pipe is a small addition that removes the most likely reason you would need a plumber back.
Scope, inclusions and exclusions, in writing.
Anything outside what was agreed is priced and approved before it proceeds, so no variation lands on an invoice unannounced.
