When wastewater cannot get to the sewer by gravity, it has to be handled on your property instead: collected in a sealed well and pumped up to the main, or, outside the reticulated sewer network, treated and dispersed on site. Inside the sewered inner suburbs, most of this work is pump stations for basements, rear studios and fixtures sitting below the sewer connection. Septic and effluent systems come up less often, on sites outside the reticulated network. Either way the system type is settled before we arrive, by a permit, a land capability assessment and a design that nominates the tank, the treatment and the disposal area.
Our job is putting that design in the ground correctly and connecting it to the property. Tank levels, fall and disposal layout come straight off the drawings, and if the site does not match the approved design, the change goes back to your consultant before installation proceeds. What we do, what your designer does and what sits outside the price is set out in writing first.

Where the sewer is higher than the fixture.
Any fixture sitting below the sewer connection needs a pump station. Anything beyond the reticulated network has to treat or hold its wastewater on site.

What affects the cost of a pump station or septic system.
A new pump station is priced on the storage arrangement, the pump type and duty, access to the pit or tank, the length and route of the rising main, the valves required and how it connects to the existing drainage. A septic installation turns on the system type, excavation depth, ground conditions and how easily machinery reaches the disposal area. Restricted access and an occupied building add labour and staging to either.
For a repair, the question is whether the fault stops at the pump or whether the pit, valves, discharge pipework or the drain downstream also need work, and a site assessment separates the two before anything proceeds. Every job is quoted in writing once the documents and the site have been assessed, with permit and design fees stated as sitting outside the price.
